Text Injection Issues
Troubleshoot text not appearing in applications
After transcription, Yapper “types” your text into the active application. If text isn’t appearing where you expect it, this guide will help you fix the problem.
How Text Injection Works
Yapper uses macOS Accessibility APIs to simulate keyboard input. It types your transcription character by character into whatever text field currently has focus.
Requirements for text to appear:
- A text field must be active (cursor blinking)
- The application must accept keyboard input
- Accessibility permission must be granted to Yapper
Text Not Appearing at All
Check Accessibility Permission
The most common cause is missing Accessibility permission:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
- Find Yapper in the list
- Ensure the toggle is on
If Yapper isn’t in the list:
- Click the + button
- Navigate to Applications
- Select Yapper
- Turn on the toggle
Verify Permission Is Working
Check in Yapper:
- Open Settings → Preferences
- Look at the Permissions section
- Accessibility should show a green checkmark
Restart After Granting Permission
Sometimes macOS requires an app restart after permission changes:
- Quit Yapper (menu bar → Quit Yapper)
- Reopen Yapper
- Try recording again
Text Goes to Wrong Application
Ensure Correct Focus
Before recording:
- Click directly in the text field where you want text
- Verify the cursor is blinking in that field
- Don’t click anywhere else after starting recording
Don’t Switch Apps During Recording
If you switch applications while recording:
- Text will go to wherever focus is when transcription completes
- Keep focus on your target app until you see the green success indicator
Focus Lost During Processing
Some apps aggressively grab focus. If this happens:
- Try keeping the target app in focus longer
- Avoid notifications or alerts during recording
- Consider disabling “Focus” or “Do Not Disturb” apps temporarily
Text Appears Partially
Typing Speed
Yapper types quickly, but some apps can’t keep up.
If characters are missing:
- The app may have a slow text input handler
- Try typing a shorter phrase
- Use copy-paste as workaround (dictate to Notes, then copy)
Special Characters
Some characters may not type correctly:
- Emoji (generally not supported)
- Some Unicode characters
- Language-specific characters (depends on keyboard layout)
App-Specific Issues
Some Apps Work, Others Don’t
If transcription works in some apps but not others:
Apps that work well:
- Native macOS apps (Mail, Notes, TextEdit, Messages)
- Most web browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox)
- Most text editors and IDEs
Apps that may have issues:
- Electron apps with custom input handling
- Apps that use non-standard text controls
- Virtual machines (Parallels, VMware)
- Remote desktop applications
Web Browsers
For web browser text fields:
- Click directly in the text field before recording
- Some sites use custom input handlers that may interfere
- Try a different browser if one doesn’t work
Microsoft Office
Office apps generally work, but:
- Make sure the cursor is in the document, not a toolbar
- Some Office features (like “Read Aloud”) may conflict
- Try closing any Office side panels
Electron Apps (Slack, Discord, VS Code)
These apps sometimes have custom text handling:
- Ensure the app is in focus
- Click directly in the text input area
- Try disabling any custom keyboard features in the app
Terminal/Command Line
Terminal apps usually work:
- Click in the terminal window
- Text will be typed at the current cursor position
- Be careful with commands—transcribed text will be entered as-is
Virtual Keyboards and Input Methods
Third-Party Keyboard Tools
Text expanders, keyboard remappers, or input tools may conflict:
- Try disabling other input tools temporarily
- Test if Yapper works without them
- Look for compatibility settings in the other tools
Multiple Keyboard Layouts
If you use multiple keyboard layouts:
- Check your current keyboard layout before recording
- Some characters may differ between layouts
- Stick to one layout during transcription
System-Level Issues
Secure Input Mode
Some apps enable “Secure Input Mode” (like password fields), which blocks text injection.
You’ll know this is happening if:
- Text works in most apps but not some
- The problematic field is related to passwords or security
- Yapper’s text injection is silently blocked
Solution: There’s no workaround—these fields intentionally block automated input for security.
System Integrity Protection
Yapper requires standard permissions; it doesn’t need SIP disabled. If you’ve modified SIP settings:
- Consider restoring default SIP
- Some modifications may affect Accessibility APIs
Workarounds
Copy-Paste Method
If direct typing doesn’t work in an app:
- Dictate into a working app (Notes, TextEdit)
- Copy the text (⌘ C)
- Paste into the problematic app (⌘ V)
File Transcription
For longer content:
- Use Yapper’s file transcription feature
- Transcribe to the window
- Copy the result
- Paste where needed
Testing Text Injection
To verify text injection is working:
- Open TextEdit (Applications → TextEdit)
- Create a new document
- Click in the document
- Record a short phrase with Yapper
- Text should appear in TextEdit
If it works in TextEdit but not your target app, the issue is app-specific.
Reset Accessibility
As a last resort, reset Accessibility permissions:
- Open Terminal
- Run:
tccutil reset Accessibility - Restart your Mac
- Re-grant Accessibility permission to Yapper
- Test again
Note: This resets Accessibility for ALL apps, so you’ll need to re-grant permission to any other apps that need it.
