File Transcription
Transcribe audio files like MP3, WAV, and M4A
In addition to live dictation, Yapper can transcribe existing audio files. This is useful for transcribing recordings, voice memos, podcasts, or any other audio content.
Supported Formats
Yapper supports the following audio file formats:
| Format | Extension | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | .mp3 | Music, podcasts, voice recordings |
| WAV | .wav | High-quality recordings, professional audio |
| M4A | .m4a | Apple Voice Memos, iOS recordings, iTunes |
How to Transcribe a File
Step 1: Open File Transcription
- Click the Yapper icon in the menu bar
- Select Transcribe Audio File…
A window will open for file transcription.
Step 2: Select Your File
- Click Choose File… in the transcription window
- Navigate to your audio file
- Select the file and click Open
The window will display:
- File name
- Duration (length of the audio)
- File size
Step 3: Start Transcription
- Review the file information to confirm you have the right file
- Click Start Transcription
- Wait for the transcription to complete
A progress indicator shows the status. Longer files take more time—expect roughly real-time processing (a 5-minute file takes about 5 minutes to transcribe).
Step 4: Copy the Result
Once transcription is complete:
- Review the transcribed text in the window
- Click Copy to copy it to your clipboard
- Paste it wherever you need it
Tips for Better Results
Audio Quality
Transcription accuracy depends heavily on audio quality:
- Clear speech — Clean recordings with minimal background noise work best
- Consistent volume — Avoid recordings where speakers are very quiet or very loud
- Single speaker — Yapper doesn’t distinguish between speakers; multi-speaker audio gets transcribed as a single stream of text
Language Settings
File transcription uses the same language setting as live dictation:
- Go to Settings → Transcription → Language
- Select the language spoken in your audio file
- Return to file transcription
If your audio contains multiple languages, set the primary language and expect mixed results for secondary languages.
Model Selection
Larger models produce better transcription accuracy:
- Large v3 Turbo (recommended) — Best balance of speed and accuracy
- Large v3 — Maximum accuracy, slower processing
- Smaller models — Faster but less accurate
If you’re transcribing important content, use the largest model you can.
Processing Time
Transcription time depends on:
| Factor | Impact |
|---|---|
| File length | Longer files take longer |
| Model size | Larger models are slightly slower |
| Mac performance | Apple Silicon Macs are significantly faster |
As a general rule, expect processing to take approximately as long as the audio file’s duration on Apple Silicon Macs.
Limitations
What File Transcription Doesn’t Do
- No speaker identification — Yapper doesn’t label who is speaking
- No timestamps — The output is plain text without time markers
- No auto-typing — Results are copied manually, not auto-typed like live dictation
- No AI enhancement — File transcription doesn’t apply AI enhancement automatically (you can paste the text and process it separately if needed)
File Size Limits
There’s no hard file size limit, but very long files (several hours) may:
- Take a long time to process
- Use significant memory
- Be better split into smaller segments
For files longer than 30-60 minutes, consider splitting them into smaller chunks.
Common Use Cases
Voice Memos
Transcribe voice memos recorded on your iPhone:
- Transfer the
.m4afile to your Mac (via AirDrop, iCloud, or cable) - Open File Transcription in Yapper
- Select the file and transcribe
Meeting Recordings
Transcribe recorded meetings or calls:
- Export the recording as MP3, WAV, or M4A
- Transcribe in Yapper
- Copy the result into your notes or documentation
Note: Always ensure you have consent to record and transcribe conversations.
Podcasts and Interviews
Transcribe podcast episodes or interview recordings:
- Download or export the audio file
- Transcribe in Yapper
- Use the text for show notes, articles, or research
Troubleshooting
”Unsupported file format” error
The file isn’t in a supported format. Convert it to MP3, WAV, or M4A using an audio converter or:
- QuickTime Player (File → Export As → Audio Only)
- Online converters
- FFmpeg (for technical users)
Transcription quality is poor
- Check that the correct language is selected
- Try a larger speech model
- Ensure the audio quality is good (clear speech, minimal noise)
Transcription is stuck or very slow
- Let it run—longer files take time
- Check Activity Monitor for Yapper’s CPU usage (it should be actively processing)
- Try a smaller model if your Mac is struggling
